This mask, made using the burnt-wood technique, is coated with kaolin to create the graphic effect. In Grassfields culture, the birth of twins or triplets in a family is considered a sign of blessing. The parents earn the title of "Tagni" for the father and "Magni" for the mother. They are then de facto exempt from certain socio-cultural obligations. The Magni Bamiléké are venerated and, as such, take part in cultural practices for the purification and initiation of young people into the kingdom. The chief gives oil, salt and jujube to feed the twins, who are considered gods. The African mask is carved from burnt kolatier wood and covered with white clay.
